Peter,

There are a few areas where I have used VC in the PM/CS modules, here's some examples:

  • Configurable task lists (usually used in conjunction with the configuration tab on the equipment). This was used to auto determine order operations for CS orders dependent upon the task list chosen by the user.
  • Configurable BOMs (usually used in conjunction with the configuration tab on the equipment). This was used to auto determine order operation materials for CS orders dependent upon the task list chosen by the user.
  • A variant class type 300 on the equipment. We used this to give a "points weighting" to determine the amout of maintenance required at the equipment level.
  • A variant class type 300 on the functional location. We used this to give a "points weighting" to determine the amout of maintenance required at the FLoc level.

There are probably other areas where you can use the variant class 300 on other PM objects too, but I have never used them.

Peter

Maybe we should turn the question around...

Why do YOU think you need to use VC in your design??

Hell  Peter,

Configurable Tasklist:

Suppose a Motor repair facility is there, where motors of various types like illustrated in the document are repaired. Then a large common tasklist using variant class 300 can be used to cater all motors. When we enter the parameters of the motor (like kw, rpm, type etc) the relevant operations are copied to the Order.

Configurable Material:

Suppose a Steel Mill is there for manufacturing plates. With the help of Configurable material One Material code will be able cater different material variant requirements for selling by just altering the characteristic values attached its variant class. For example for the case of manufacturing a steel plate with same thickness and width but different lengths at times can be managed through this concept by just changing the value in Length characteristic of the Material.

Also go through this:Material Variants - Variant Configuration

Similar concepts for other variants also.

Working with Configurable BOMs
