ABAP + Java Stack

hi,

Can anyone tell  me what are the uses of having an ABAP + Java stack over the

standalone Java stack ? If i intend to use only the portal then where can i use the

ABAP stack or what can i do with the ABAP stack ? are there any specific

applications that can be deployed on the ABAP stack which can be used by the

portal ?
