Difference between Fields and Tables in a Database

Hi again everyone

I have a quick question on the difference between fields and tables in a Database.

My understanding of it is as follows:

A table is a grouping of data for example: House number.

A field is one entry in that table for example: 1, 50, 99.

Another table would be for First Name

Fields in this table would be John, Mike, Joe...

Am I correct in my assumptions here.

Please advise if not.

Thanks again

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

There are a number of different types of databases, and many implementations of the various types by vendors who do not always use consistent terminology, so there is no one right answer.

However, odds are good that you are asking about Relational Databases such as SAP's Adaptive Server.  If so, I suggest you check out the "terminology" section of the Wikipedia article on relational databases: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relational_database#Terminology
