Information on SAP kernel

Former Member

HI all,

I am in the final straight of getting my notes etc done for self-studying the SAP NW admin course with an eye to writing the exam in July.

ONe of the sections in the exam deals with the SAP kernel, but while I have access to all the necessary training materials, the courses referenced only have a couple of lines of information.

DO any of you perhaps have a document or link you can provide which goes a bit more in-depth on the kernel?

Thanks!!

Hi Craig,

Maybe the CST Wiki can help.

Do you have a particular question in mind?

Hi Cristiano,

I am just looking for a bit more information on what the kernel is, what it does etc. I know about the Unicod/non-Unicode support, primary and subsidiary binaries etc, but nothing more. I managed to get this off a blog on the SCN page.

Thanks!

Craig

Hi Craig,

The Kernel is the central program which acts as an interface between SAP application and operating system.

The Kernel consists of the executable programs that reside under the path "/sapmnt/<SID>/exe" (UNIX) or \usr\sap\SID\SYS\exe\run (Windows)

These files help startup the R/3 system, initialize the memory, create buffers and start managing the requests from users and effectively utilizing of hardware resources.

The kernel is also responsible for starting and stopping all the application services like dispatcher, message server, collector etc.
