When we talk about Middle-ware topic especially when ERP and CRM are involved, ERP is always treated as leading system.
It means when we are performing initial / request download, the data is moving from ERP to CRM, in this case we actually start tcode in CRM to trigger download. Once initial download is done, with correct configuration setup, every time you make changes in ERP, the change could also be transferred to CRM automatically. This is called delta download.
On the other hand you can also trigger upload in CRM system. In this case the data is moving from CRM to ERP.
