I have to create a Dangerous goods UN number.

Can someone please tell me as to what is an UN number and how is it created and where?

UN Number is maintained in the dangrous goods master with transaction DGP1 and DGP2.

But I would like to know if the UN number is first created in the system and then maintained in the dangerous goods master or this UN number value is just assigned to the material in the dangerous goods master?
