Gzip compression level?

Hey Experts,

We do have EP 7 SP15 portal up and running in MSCS cluster environment and we use F5 for load balancing!

As you know there are different level of Gzip compression in F5 (1-9), Iu2019m just wondering witch level is the safe and is there any document out there, that possibly can show me the advantage and/or disadvantage of Gzip compression in relation with SAP Portal.

Thanks,

Maryam

Hi,

The first recommendation would be to only to do gzipping once, either on the portal server or on F5.

Compression affects the size of data sent over the wire, but costs extra CPU time on both server and client.

Since F5 has specialized hardware and generally a lot of capacity it would make sense to put the gzip here. Note though that more traffic will then be sent between portal and F5, but this should go over a quick internal line.

Bandwidth was much more expensive a few years ago, so very high gzip levels I believe are generally not recommended unless you have clients on very slow dial-up lines.

Which level to choose depends therefore heavily on the clients of your system.
