The Cloud Foundry Summit took place on 5/11/15 and 5/12/15 in the Bay Area.  I attended the event on both days and really enjoyed the experience.  As well as offering many engaging technology sessions, the Summit had an exhibit floor where companies showed interesting demos.

What I’d like to share here are the most frequently asked questions we received at the SAP booth.  Since SAP was a Gold sponsor of this year’s event, we received many questions regarding SAP’s Cloud Foundry plans, as well as how our next generation HANA Cloud Platform will be evolving with Cloud Foundry.  Here are the three most common questions we received:

  1. What are SAP’s plans for utilizing Cloud Foundry?

SAP is one of the founding Platinum members of the Cloud Foundry Foundation, and started investigating Cloud Foundry as early as 2011.  We’re committed to providing an open platform that allows our customers and partners to run their business in the cloud in real-time.

SAP is an active contributor to Cloud Foundry.  Our plan is to leverage Cloud Foundry in our next generation HANA Cloud Platform, which will be available in Beta later this year. When Cloud Foundry is fully integrated into the HANA Cloud Platform stack, users will not only be able to leverage the rich resources SAP provides, but also the build packs and services that come with Cloud Foundry.  SAP is committed to providing a well-rounded PaaS to our customers, partners and developers.

  2. Is SAP using the public, open source CF and extending it?

SAP is utilizing the open source variant of Cloud Foundry, and isn’t planning on using/extending the commercial version of Cloud Foundry offered by Pivotal.  We are however, collaborating with Pivotal on Cloud Foundry’s open source components.

  3. Can customers develop and publish apps on HANA Cloud Platform that leverage Cloud Foundry?

Yes, once the Cloud Foundry runtime is available in HANA Cloud Platform, anyone who has an account can start building and publishing applications on HCP, thereby utilizing the resources from both SAP and CF.

For those of you who are curious about how SAP HANA Cloud Platform will be leveraging Cloud Foundry, stay tuned for more information that will become available in the near future.  At the meantime, if you have questions, please post them here.
