During HERUG 2016 held in Durham last week, Keith (James Harmon) and I were happy to present a session around "Research Reporting and Visualization" to demonstrate the proof of concept project for the euroCRIS, an international organization for research information, CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) based data model using SAP Lumira. This prototype developed by Imen show how Lumira’s dynamic dashboards can provide intuitive and interactive insight, and visualization to support strategic decisions for the University, Departments and Researchers in the areas of research funding and ideas to discovery and intellectual property rights.

For the courageous attendees – as it was the last session of the conference-, we put into perspective her work that is described more in details in her blog http://scn.sap.com/community/higher-education-and-research/blog/2016/01/06/using-lumira-and-domain-s.... with the research personas developed for a Design Thinking Workshop http://scn.sap.com/community/higher-education-and-research/blog/2014/11/21/toward-a-new-research-inf... .

Curious to double check if our prototype was able to answers the questions of our user group, we decided to coinvolve the 25+ attendees with a 5 minutes exercise before the demonstration.

The exercise was simple to choose one of the persona and to answer the question How BI/Dashboards/Predictive analytics can help her?”. Here is the summary of the answers collected after the session.

Erika the research project manager

  • Is my project on track? (x5) this year? Over the whole duration?
  • How is my burning rate? (x2)
  • Which resources do I need to finish my project on time? (x2)
  • Are milestones delivered, what’s due when? (x2)
  • Are my expenses eligible for funding?
  • Are my project related data uptodate and reliable?
  • Where my project grant will be at the end of the project (coarse and fine grain)?

Isabel the project management officer

  • Are applications submitted on time?
  • What is the success rate of my faculty applications?
  • How many applications have my PIs submitted?
  • Are faculty fully expending but not over expending all available funds?
  • What are the available resources per this year, on average?

Heinz the head of the institute

  • What are the Top 5 Research topics and Researchers?
  • What is my budget (Expenses and resources)? (x2)
  • What is the split of research funding by grantor?
  • What are the numbers of patents, publications by faculty, department?

Tom the researcher

  • Do I have enough budget?
  • Do I consume the funds? On which project?
  • What is the impact of my Research?

Moreover several adjectives were used to qualify the platform such as Intuitive, Informative, Reliable/Trusted, Fast, Multiple perspective, 360 vision, Drillable.

While it was not a real surprise, we were happy to reassess that our proof of concept answered the large majority of the requests together with a bunch of others (eg. publication impact per project, ‘age’ of the research portfolio, number of grants to be written to sustain the research effort).

If some of our customers are interested, we will be happy to contribute within a co-innovation project: simply drop an email to Keith or myself.
