Todays most Public Cloud platforms (like Amazon Web Services, Rackspace) provides Auto Scale functionality to support event-based or scheduled auto growth of resources for your cloud systems and/or applications.

But, when you check the popular platforms, you'll notice that the Auto Scale is only possible HORIZONTALLY. Which means, Scaling up means adding additonal application servers to existing server farm and balancing the load via a Load Balancer.

What if it is possible to Auto Scale an existing server VERTICALLY?

Which means, you can increase the CPU and RAM gradually until you met the required resources.

Virtual Environments provides this functionality. VMWARE and IBM's DLPAR supports this. CPU and RAM resources increases when system reaches a treshold.

But, is there a public/private cloud platform supporting this VERTICAL AUTO SCALE UP?

If, somehow we find this Vertical Auto Scaling functionality, then how SAP AS ABAP and AS Java will react to this?

I would like to open a discussion around this as I'll share important technologies we're experiencing today.
