Coding is the literacy of the digital age, a whole new language for children to speak fluently and express themselves in the 21st century. However, in Africa, less than 1% of children leave school with basic coding skills. Knowing that 11 million youth are expected to enter the African labor market every year over the next decade and that digital jobs could increase their income by 40% to 200%, acting now is a must.

For this reason, SAP, Simplon.co, Galway Education Centre and Cape Town Science Centre are teaming up to deliver Africa Code Week. In October 2015, this continent-wide initiative will bring hundreds of coding workshops to 20,000 children and youth from three different age groups (8-11, 12-17 and 18-24) across 11 countries (South Africa, Angola, Cameroon, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Togo and Egypt).

To enable parents and teachers of children aged 8-11, openSAP will host a four week course, Africa Code Week: Teaching Programming to Young Learners, starting June 10. The course will show learners how to download and use Scratch,

a programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations. In the process of designing and programming Scratch projects, young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. The openSAP course will cover the following topics:

  • Introducing Scratch and the Art of Coding
  • Creating an Interactive Digital Environment
  • Coding Geometric Shapes and Freehand
  • Planning and Designing Games

Although the course is part of the Africa Code Week initiative, the course is

open to learners across the globe. You don’t need any previous experience with coding, just an interest in learning to code or finding a fun and easy way to introduce your children to your passion for coding!

As with all openSAP courses; registration, learning content, final exam, and Record of Achievement are delivered free of charge. All course materials are downloadable and you can also download Scratch to work offline.  All you need to sign up is a valid e-mail address.
