What-if scenarios with SAP Enhanced Maintenance and Service Planning

by Katarzyna Maciak  | Product Owner - SAP Custom Development

SAP Enhanced Maintenance and Service Planning provides an executable Maintenance and Service Plan.  The ESMP tool forecasts and schedules maintenance workload based on predicted flying rates and the maintenance program for each airplane and its major equipment sub-assemblies.  The process also considers available resources (critical people and maintenance facilities) and compliance dates.

The maintenance schedule provides a single cross organization view of the airplane-visit schedule, capacity load on all key resources, for the next > 10 years. The schedule serves as a master document across the departments establishing the the “what” and “when".

However, in daily operations there can be many changes that impact the maintenance organization, the facilities, and resource skill sets: changes of a fleet size, changes of the maintenance program, extension of maintenance program, delay in the arrival of new fleets, new fleets arriving, etc. This is why SAP Enhanced Maintenance and Service Planning also a projects, predicts, and provides the element of "what-if" for future possible planning scenarios.

SAP Enhanced Maintenance and Service Planning provides a Simulative-Planning capability which can help to support important business decisions based on "what-if" scenarios, for example:

  • For different numbers of hangars
  • For different numbers of workers
  • For different numbers of aircraft
  • For changes in Maintenance Program
  • For different utilization rates (operation patterns):

The functionality allows for setting up planning simulations, which allow the examination of all aspects and options of a given situation, as well as, to simulate the effect of a number of parameters either before running a new maintenance plan or to view the effects of changes to an existing plan.

In simulative-planning, the planning-version-specific data can be changed. All such changes are only valid for the simulative planning version and the active version of the plan remains unchanged. Any planning version can be copied to a simulation version automatically, including master data and transnational data. The planning results can be then merged to the active version and transferred to SAP ERP for operative planning.

Simulative-planning is fully integrated in the MSP Planning Board where the planning simulation can be displayed, changed, and re-planned. Further, maintenance objects without external reference to the ERP functional location/equipment can be used in EMSP, which can be used only for simulation purposes.

Using SAP’s EMSP simulative-scenarios, companies can support strategic business decisions by:

  • Identifying bottleneck situations for different what-if scenarios
  • Recognizing and resolving resource shortages early in advance
  • Identifying unused capacity for customer service offering
  • Analyzing impact of future facilities and future fleet changes

We will be discussing Enhanced Service Maintenance Planning at SAPPHIRENOW on Thursday May 7 at 4pm .   philip.tehau will be at SAPPHIRENOW  and will be happy to discuss this and related topics from his first blog in this series "Maintenance Scheduling for Airlines with SAP Enhanced Maintenance and Service Planning
