Hi,
Pl. see the screen shot of fast entry screen as visible in production orders.
When we click the display configuration (spects icon) button following screen pops up which shows the characteristics and its values.
This is used in industries (like Steel ) where a material is to be identified based on its characteristic and characteristic values.
like number of pieces, length, unit weight etc based on these three inputs the total weight can be calculated by applying suitable dependency formula.
The characteristics values gets populated from the sales order.
To get this fast entry screen it needs to be activated as suggested by other contributers.
Hope this will help you to understand purpose of fast entry.

Chin,
In production orders you can configure the header material and co-products simply and quickly using the Fast Data Entry tab. You can enter value assignments for up to ten characteristics without having to go to the characteristic value assignment screen. This greatly reduces entry effort, particularly for materials with few characteristics and for preconfigured materials.

I don't know how useful it is for regular production orders, but SAP help says it's handy for SAP Mill products
