Business Intelligence platform Upgrade Guide
SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.1 Support Package 1
You can migrate your system data and business intelligence content to BI platform 4.1 from XI Release 2 SP2 (or higher), or a Business Intelligence Archive Resource (BIAR) file generated from XI R2 SP2.
You can install the BI platform independently, or side-by-side with an existing deployment. The two deployments can work at the same time, even if they are on the same machine.
Minor Release Update Guide - SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Suite 4.1
2013-07-
You have two options for installing SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Suite 4.1 products:
• An update install that can upgrade your BI Suite 4.0 products to the 4.1 level.
Follow the instructions in this guide.
• A full installation of BI Suite 4.1 products.
So you can either update your 4.0 with the following media
Analytics Solutions" SBOP BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE PLATFORM (SBOP ENTERPRISE)" SBOP BI PLATFORM (ENTERPRISE)" SBOP BI PLATFORM 4.1
SBOP BI PLATFORM SERVERS 4.1

Or perform a new installation on an other server and promote custom object from the 4.0

The last method could be better has the documentation states that the upgrade of an older version might miss some new features as stated in the here under note
1721866 - What Maintenance Releases Roll into each Service release for BI4 and BI 4.1
The update installation program only updates files that are already installed. For example, if you previously performed a custom installation, the update will only update the subset of files that were
installed during the original, custom installation. As a result, new features that require new services or other files must be manually installed after the initial installation has completed
Hi,
I've just finished the upgrade from 4.0 (thus just a minor upgrade), going through config & promote content...
I'll see how fast users & dev can break it 😉
